Benefits of ginger
Ginger has a long and storied history as a healing herb, tracing back over 5,000 years.
Originating in Southeast Asia, it quickly became a valued commodity in ancient civilizations for its culinary, medicinal, and aromatic properties.
In Ayurveda and TCM, ginger has been used for millennia as a warming herb to balance the body, stimulate digestion, and treat colds and respiratory ailments. It was believed to ignite “digestive fire,” aiding in nutrient absorption and overall vitality.
The main constituent of ginger is gingerols which have antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties according to research.
Here’s why it deserves a place in your cup:
- Eases Digestive Discomfort: Ginger is well-known for its ability to relieve nausea, reduce bloating, and support healthy digestion.
- Fights Inflammation: Its natural anti-inflammatory compounds, like gingerol, help reduce joint pain, muscle soreness, and inflammation.
- Boosts Immunity: Ginger’s antioxidant properties enhance immune defense, making it an excellent choice during cold and flu season.
- Supports Circulation: By improving blood flow, ginger can help maintain cardiovascular health and provide a gentle warming effect.
- Soothes Aches and Pains: Whether it’s a headache or menstrual cramps, ginger has natural pain-relieving properties to bring comfort.
- Balances Blood Sugar: Some studies suggest that ginger can help regulate blood sugar levels, supporting metabolic health.
Ready to make a perfect cup of this ginger lemon honey tea?
Ingredients
You just need these simple ingredients
- 2 cups water. You can increase the water if you want to make more. Double the water to make tea for two people, and then of course increase ginger and lemon juice accordingly.
- 1-2 inches piece of fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced. I did not peel ginger. You can though but I find it tedious. Be sure to clean the ginger well if not peeling it.
- Juice of 1 fresh lemon (about 2-3 tablespoons). If you like it lemony just add more lemon.
- 1-2 teaspoons honey. Use as much honey but be careful not to overpower the ginge lemon combo flavor. You can also use maple syrup, or another sweetener.

How to make ginger Lemon Honey Tea
-
Start by boiling about 2 cups of water in a saucepan.
-
While that’s heating up, grab a small piece of fresh ginger—about an inch or so—peel it, and slice it nice and thin
-
Once the water is boiling, toss the ginger slices in, turn the heat down a bit, and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes. The longer you let it simmer, the stronger the flavor will be.
-
When it’s done, pour the tea through a strainer into your mug to catch all those ginger pieces.
-
Squeeze in the juice from a fresh lemon—about two or three tablespoons, depending on how lemony you like it.
-
If you want it a little sweeter, stir in a teaspoon or two of honey, maple syrup, or your favorite sweetener. Give it a quick stir, and that’s it! Your tea is ready to sip and enjoy

Variations and Substitutions
Make this tea your own by adding or swapping ingredients:
- Additions:
- Turmeric: A pinch of turmeric (and black pepper for absorption) enhances the tea’s anti-inflammatory properties.
- Cinnamon Stick: Adds a comforting layer of warmth and may help regulate blood sugar levels.
- Mint Leaves: Toss in a few fresh mint leaves for a refreshing twist.
- Orange Juice or Zest: Replace some lemon juice with orange juice or zest for a sweeter citrus profile.
- Cayenne Pepper: A pinch gives the tea a spicy kick and promotes circulation.
- Substitutions:
- Use lime juice instead of lemon for a tangy variation.
- Swap fresh ginger for 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger if needed.
- Replace honey or maple syrup with agave syrup, or stevia, or skip the sweetener entirely for a sugar-free option.
Storage Tips
While ginger lemon tea is best served fresh, you can store extra for later. Make a larger batch, let it cool, and refrigerate it in a covered container for up to two days.
When ready to enjoy, reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave. Alternatively, freeze leftover tea in an ice cube tray and add the cubes to hot water for instant tea.
Ginger lemon tea is an easy and delightful way to stay hydrated, support your health, and enjoy a warm moment of peace.
